Just Eat It - A Food Waste Story (Official Trailer)
“40% of everything raised or grown is not in fact eaten . . . globally about one third of all the food produced is not consumed” said Jonathan Bloom, author of the book American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do About It) (affiliate link) published in 2011.
Just Eat It – A Food Waste Story (Official Trailer via Vimeo) is an 2014 award-winning documentary by Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer. Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant from Vancouver dive into the issue of food waste from farm, through retail, and all the way to their own fridge. The couple pledge to live for six months without buying any groceries, living solely off rescued food.
Food waste occurs at each stage of the food supply chain. For example, farmers are throwing away imperfect or non-calibrated fruits and vegetables because supermarkets deem them unsuitable to be sold to us. Retailers are discarding food products whose printed expiration date has passed but which are still edible. And us at home we are also throwing away food…
This is an enlightening documentary which gives food for thought.
